The Urban Education Programme (UEP), operates across key urban centers in Kenya of Nairobi, Eldoret, Nakuru, Mombasa, and their environs. This initiative aims to address educational disparities and enhance access to quality primary, junior school, secondary and special needs education for refugees in urban areas.
The program focusses on interventions that include tuition fee support, payment of related levies, school project development fees, provision of uniforms and Cash-Based Interventions (CBI). Program activities involved, home and school monitoring visits, educational guidance and counseling sessions, student conferences, stakeholder forums, community sensitization and mobilization efforts.
In 2024, the project reached 328 (160 female and 168 male) beneficiaries in primary, secondary, and special needs schools. Of these, 32 were CWDs. The project focused on tuition fee support and Cash-Based Interventions (CBI), aiming to alleviate financial barriers and foster equal opportunities for all learners, irrespective of their abilities. 183 pupils were facilitated lunch levy support, ensuring all supported students received meals at their respective schools. 32 students did the KPSEA exam for Grade 6 and 30 high school students sat for the national KCSE examination.
Notably, the program successfully supported 110 (51 male, 59 Female) new beneficiaries across primary, secondary, and special needs schools, further expanding its reach and impact.
Implementing Cash-Based Interventions (CBI) has demonstrated positive educational outcomes and impact, particularly in addressing financial constraints faced by vulnerable students. Through provision of direct financial assistance, UEP facilitated improved access to education, enhanced school attendance, and ultimately contributed to beneficiaries' academic success and well-being.
The Urban Education Programme (UEP) emerged as a pivotal initiative in addressing educational inequalities and promoting inclusive education in urban areas of Kenya. Through targeted interventions and strategic partnerships, UEP continues to empower refugee students to realize their full potential and build a brighter future for themselves and their communities.
