Climate Change and Adaptation
Windle International is working hard to integrate climate change curriculum and projects into all of our programming. Please check this page for continuing updates as we further develop this curriculum.
IMPACT Project: Windle International Somalia x ADRA
2024-2027
Somalia faces a critical shortage of workers equipped with the skills needed to support a sustainable economy. The IMPACT project addresses this gap by building capacity in three key green sectors: renewable energy, the circular economy, and sustainable agribusiness.
At its core, the project works to strengthen Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centres, equipping them to deliver practical, relevant training that prepares learners for emerging green industries. Alongside this, the project improves coordination between public institutions and the private sector, helping ensure that training pathways lead to real employment opportunities.
A central priority is reaching those most often left behind. Women, young people, and rural communities are placed at the heart of the project's approach, with access to training and economic participation expanded to groups that have historically faced the greatest barriers.
The project contributes to Somalia's National Development Plan and aligns with multiple Sustainable Development Goals, supporting the country's broader transition toward an economy that is greener, more resilient, and more equitable. By developing a skilled workforce in renewable energy, waste and resource management, and sustainable food systems, IMPACT lays practical foundations for long-term climate resilience and inclusive growth.
WIK Interventions
In 2023, WIK developed several programmes aimed at increasing knowledge and awareness of the the impact climate change on the communities we serve. Two interventions were implemented:
Agroforestry: WIK promoted planting trees in schools, refugee camps, and communities. Trees not
only help to mitigate climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide but also provide multiple benefits,
such as reducing soil erosion, improving water quality, and providing shade. We have also supported
the establishment of School Environment Conservation Clubs, which spearhead school tree-planting
exercises. The trees replenish the environment and provide fruits and shade to learners.
Water Harvesting: We supported the construction of water harvesting structures such as rainwater
harvesting tanks. This helps conserve water, becoming increasingly scarce due to climate change,
and provides a reliable water source for households and school farms.
