Windle International Somalia
Windle International Somalia operates in Somalia and Somaliland, specifically focusing on education and development programmes, as well as providing teacher training and scholarship opportunities to refugee students. WISOM works towards providing quality education to children and young people, particularly those affected by conflict, displacements, and poverty. The organisation believes that education is a fundamental right and key driver for sustainable development and peacebuilding in Somalia.
Programme Overview
-
Windle International Somalia (WISOM) recognizes the critical role of well-trained teachers in delivering quality education, especially in conflict-affected and remote regions. To address challenges such as low teacher-pupil ratios and inadequate training, WISOM employs an innovative On-the-Job Training (OJT) model. This approach combines coaching, mentoring, and blended learning techniques to provide certified training and continuous professional development for teachers.
WISOM's initiatives align with Sustainable Development Goal #4 (Quality Education) by empowering teachers to deliver inclusive education and fostering peacebuilding through education. Additionally, the organization advocates for increasing women's representation in the teaching profession and improving English language proficiency among educators.
-
Windle International Somalia (WISOM) is committed to ensuring that education continues even in the most challenging circumstances. In areas affected by conflict, displacement, floods, and drought, WISOM works with communities, government partners, and humanitarian actors to restore access to safe, quality education. Through its emergency education interventions, WISOM supports the construction of classrooms, sanitation facilities, libraries, and the distribution of teaching and learning materials. These efforts create safe, inclusive learning spaces that foster students’ holistic development. By advocating for education as a key pillar of emergency response, WISOM ensures that learning is not interrupted, but used as a tool for recovery, resilience, and long-term development.
-
As an educational organization, Windle International Somalia also focuses on improving the education infrastructure in emergency settings by providing supports to communities that are affected by conflicts, floods, and droughts.
Since 2020, WISOM, through its emergency education interventions, has constructed classrooms, sanitary supports like hand washing stations, libraries, TLMs and other facilities necessary for effective learning environments. By providing safe and conducive spaces for education, the organization aims to create enabling environments for students’ holistic development.
-
In alignment with the Somali government's vision to expand employment and livelihood opportunities, Windle International Somalia (WISOM) supports youth affected by conflict and crisis through access to technical and vocational education and training. These programmes equip young people with practical, market-driven skills in areas such as entrepreneurship, trades, and other income-generating fields—enabling them to become self-reliant and economically active. By focusing on skills that match market needs, WISOM helps transform vulnerable youth into agents of change, capable of contributing to the social and economic rebuilding of their communities. Through this approach, WISOM promotes long-term resilience, stability, and inclusive development across Somalia.
