Milk market opening

In July, Windle International Kenya-Somalia officially handed over the newly rehabilitated and solar-powered Jalam Milk Market to the Jalam Milk Cooperatives in Burtinle District. This initiative is part of the Advancing Circular Technologies for Infrastructure and Value-chain Enhancement in Somalia (ACTIVE) Project, funded by the European Union in Somalia.

The upgraded facility features a rehabilitated market structure, a 5.4kW solar photovoltaic system with battery storage, solar security lighting, 12 chest freezers, stainless steel milk transport containers and portable kiosks for milk vendors, providing the infrastructure needed to reduce post-harvest losses, improve food safety and strengthen local dairy businesses. This will provide a great opportunity for female vendors.

The handover, witnessed by local authorities and government representatives, marks an important step in placing sustainable, climate-smart infrastructure in the hands of the community while strengthening Somalia's dairy value chain through renewable energy and local ownership. Windle International staff, including Kenya-Somalia Regional Director Phyllis Mureu and Country Director Khalif Kobane were there for the site launch.

Through the ACTIVE Project, Windle International continues to work with partners to expand renewable energy access, strengthen agri-food value chains and create inclusive economic opportunities for communities across Somalia.
