Originally from Yemen, Suleiman Ahmed Mohamed fled his home country due to the civil war, seeking refuge in Hargeisa, Somaliland. His early life was marked by hardship, with his parents struggling to provide for his education. Despite these challenges, Ahmed remained committed to his goals, completing his primary education in Yemen and continuing with secondary school in Somaliland, fueled by his dedication and unyielding determination.

Ahmed enrolled at the University of Hargeisa, but financial difficulties soon threatened his education. A devastating fire in the Hargeisa local market destroyed numerous businesses and livelihoods—including that of Ahmed’s family. The tragedy plunged them into a deeper financial crisis, forcing Ahmed to pause his studies and take up various jobs to support his family.

“I never thought I would have to choose between my dreams and my family’s survival. When the fire took everything, we had, it felt like my future was reduced to ashes. The weight of knowing I might never afford my tuition again was a heartbreak I carried every day.”

In a moment of hope, Ahmed learned about the DAFI (Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Initiative) scholarship in UNHCR counseling desk where Windle conducts counseling sessions for the refugee students who are in need of scholarship programme. Encouraged by Windle guidance and counseling unit, he applied, seeing it as a chance to resume his studies. When he received the scholarship, it reignited his determination and provided the financial support he desperately needed.

Leaving my studies felt like losing everything I had worked for, but receiving the DAFI scholarship changed my life. Graduating now fills my heart with gratitude and hope. I am thankful to Windle for the support that helped me reclaim my dreams and inspired me to give back to my community.”

After years of hard work and perseverance, Ahmed proudly graduated with a degree in Business Management. This achievement not only fulfilled his personal dreams but also inspired others in his community facing similar hardships.

During the graduation ceremony, Ahmed expressed his gratitude and shared his journey, highlighting the importance of support in overcoming adversity. Reflecting on his journey, Ahmed stated the following:

“Graduating as a DAFI scholar feels like turning my dreams into reality. Against all odds, I’ve proven that with determination and support, nothing is impossible. This achievement is not just mine; it belongs to Windle and my family and I am deeply grateful to the Windle Team for the DAFI scholarship. This support changed my life and gave me the opportunity to achieve my dreams. Thank you for believing in me and investing in my future."

The entire Windle family is proud of the dedication shown by Ahmed and the continued support of the DAFI partnership.
