From a Refugee Student to a WASH Cluster Cordinator

Yussuf Hassan Abdullahi, State WASH Cluster Coordinator in Juba land, delivering a comprehensive water quality training for WASH partners based in Gedo region.

Introducing Yussuf Hassan Abdullahi - a remarkable individual who has dedicated his life to improving the lives of others. Born on November 27, 1992, Yussuf grew up in Hagadera refugee camp in Dadaab, Kenya. Despite the challenges he faced growing up, Yussuf was determined to pursue his education. He attended primary and secondary school in Hagadera Refugee Camp between 2000 and 2012.

Through the DD Puri scholarship program, Yussuf was able to pursue a Diploma in Water Engineering at Kenya Water Institute (KEWI) from 2016 to 2018. After completing his studies, he traveled to Somalia in October 2018 and secured his first job with the American Refugee Committee as a Water and Sanitation Technician in his home country in November 2018.

Driven by his passion to make a difference in people's lives, Yussuf continued to work towards improving access to clean water and sanitation facilities. In 2020, he started a new role as a water engineer with Save the Children and later joined Alight as a WASH engineer in October 2021.

Not content to rest on his laurels, Yussuf applied for a Bachelor's degree in Environment and Natural Resource at African Nazarene University in January 2022 and is currently pursuing his studies alongside his work.

In February 2023, Yussuf started a new role as the WASH cluster state coordinator for the Juba land state of Somalia. In this position, he oversees the coordination of WASH activities, ensuring that communities have access to clean water and sanitation facilities.
